Song for a Not Good Day
I saw Elli look at you just now, then turn away,
Eyes full of reproach, of fear.
Did she understand, dog brain alert,
That you had consigned her ten-year friend
To death? Today? In just an hour?
Fenris, freshly groomed and so, so handsome, forever gone?
In a year of crescendo-ing loss
Democracy teeters on the brink,
Our health, Earth’s health in dire danger,
Friends gone, lost to outer space
How can we cope with more?
And yet we will; we will cope with more.
The night comes earlier and earlier now
And a long winter beckons.
